Why learn a language when Google can translate for you?

With tools like Google Translate, it’s easy to wonder why we still need to learn another language. If technology can translate a sentence for us in seconds, why put in the effort? However, language is about much more than translation. Technology can help you understand the words, but it cannot fully capture the meaning, humour, emotions, or cultural context behind them.

Learning a language also gives you a better understanding of the people who speak it. Some words and expressions carry cultural meanings that simply cannot be translated directly. When you learn a language, you are also learning about the traditions, values, history, and way of thinking connected to it.

For example, the Japanese word “omotenashi” is often translated simply as “hospitality”, but its meaning goes much deeper. It reflects a cultural value of anticipating others’ needs and showing genuine care- something deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

Another Nepali word, “jutho” is often directly translated as “leftover food,” but this translation does not fully capture the family practices, social boundaries, and centuries of caste-based discrimination attached to the word. Learning a language therefore helps you understand the culture and history behind a word, rather than just its translation.

Translation can also be slow and frustrating when you have to keep rewording and checking things to get the meaning right. Speaking the language yourself makes communication more natural and personal to you.
